Abstract

Introduction. Radiotherapy becomes a standard of combination treatment of the rectal cancer. That is why the development of its pathogenetical bases is very impotent. The aim of the study. The purpose of the study was to analyze molecular and morphological effects of preoperative hypofractionation for resectable rectal cancer. Methods. 55 patients received preoperative radiotherapy with the Teratron system and Varian Unique low-energy linear accelerator. Tumor tissues obtained during surgery were studied. DNAs in tumor cells were analyzed (CycleTEST PLUS DNA ReagentKit), as well as therapeutic pathomorphosis and the rate of postoperative complications. Results. The results showed an increase in the rate of tumors with DNA index 1,5 by 1,2 times, reduced percentage of tumor cells in S-phase of the cell cycle from 9,98±1,6 to 6,4±0,8% (p<0,05), decrease in the tumor proliferation index by 1,6 times and III degree of therapeutic pathomorphosis. Conclusion. Reduced malignant potential is the pathogenetic effect of preoperative radiotherapy for rectal cancer.
